This is erotic writing at its best. Not just steaming hot sex on every page; there is a caring and nurturing storyline (with threesomes and bondage). There is as much pathos in this Vampire Queen novel as there is romance. It takes a special writer to bring that element front and center and not lose the character of the story. Reading previous entries in the series will help with background but is not strictly necessary.

Vampire Instinct, the seventh installment in the Vampire Queen series, is perhaps the most unique of all. The concept of fledgling vampires as children and all the implications this brings is brilliantly handled by Ms. Hill. The story has a full cast of intriguing characters and the main characters, Mal and Elisa, are the most fascinating of all. Ms. Hill writes with more depth and emotion each time I read her work. Vampire Instinct has everything you would want in an erotic romance. The striking backdrop of the American West and the wild untamed beasts that roam the grounds bring a sense of danger and excitement. This is a character study of two unlikely people in an extreme situation and the emotional relationship formed between Elisa and Mal is made stronger by the connection formed between Elisa and the fledglings. Every time Mal would touch Elisa it would send shivers down my spine, their sexual chemistry is profound. When they finally come together it’s explosive! Ms. Hill’s ability to write such tragic emotions in one scene and then be able to transcend that tragedy and write such loving, erotic, sensual scenes a few pages later demonstrates the power of her writing and affirms this story as a Gold Star Award. I highly recommend this book. Vampire Instinct takes the reader on an emotional roller coaster along with the characters. You won’t be disappointed!

Anyone familiar with Joey W. Hill’s Vampire Queen Series will relish this newest installment.
As with Ms. Hill’s previous books, Vampire Instinct is impossible to put down. The characters come to life on the page, becoming living, breathing people. Malachi is extremely sexy as a vampire who resists his darker compulsions, while Elisa is the perfect heroine to test him at every turn and peel away the layers to reveal the man beneath the tough façade. There is heartbreak, there is love, and there is so much emotion in this novel it’s impossible to formulate into words. It’s difficult to reveal too much about Elisa and Mal for fear of ruining the story. However, it is safe to say Mal learns to master the fragile and traumatized Elisa in the same cautious fashion he approaches her vampire charges. Although the heat and chemistry between the protagonists is off the charts, it’s the deeper emotional connection that will bring readers back to this book when they want a tear-jerker read.
Vampire Instinct is an absolute must buy for those who enjoy thoroughly developed characters, a soul-deep emotional journey, and the perfect amount of BDSM.

I LOVED this book. This book is so sexy and emotional. The author writes beautifully and she makes you feel for the characters so much. I was crying in several parts of this book, Elisa and Malachi both have damaged souls and they are perfect together. Elisa is a strong character and, while sometimes she can be emotionally frail, still has a strong heart and wants to please and be of help to everyone. Malachi is a brooding vampire, he seems to be most comfortable around his cats, and does not know what to make of his feelings toward Elisa. Some of the characters in this novel first appear in a previous book, Vampire's Claim, but this can be read as a stand alone novel. Most of the previous events mentioned in this novel occur after the story in Vampire's Claim, and there is enough explanation and background on the characters to not have to read the previous story. But as for me, this is the first book in the series that I have read, and I have just bought all the previous stories to read. I hope the author continues this series, because I can't wait to read what happens next.

Ms Hill is a MASTER at writing tortured characters, that don’t “get over” their problems, but they are able to get past their issues. It is also extremely important for me to note that Ms. Hill does not do what so many authors do, which is to trivialize the PTSD, the emotional blowback, the ongoing struggle. There is never a miraculous recovery, a mystery cure; it takes time, and her epilogues are always about growth, continual growth and continual recovery. This honesty, the psychiatric-ly healthy approach to trauma recovery, is one of the great things and important things about Ms. Hill's writing. The characters are never “perfect”; they’re always extremely human and willing to grow and change and get past their issues with the help of a supportive community and supportive partners.
There’s so much I could discuss about Vampire Instinct; this review would end up being extremely long.
It's superb. Just superb. By far and away the best book I’ve read recently, possibly the best book I’ve read all year.

Hill has done it again, thoroughly knocking me on my ass with the latest installment in her vampire series, Vampire Instinct.
If asked why, my answer would be simple. Vampire Instinct is a contradiction in terms; it is as rough as it is soft, and when the philosophical and spiritual aspects clash they fight for dominance almost as much as the characters do.
Of course, I’d be remiss if I failed to mention that Vampire Instinct is so scorching hot, you might want the fire department on speed dial to put out any spontaneous combustion that might happen while you’re reading.
Vampire Instinct is just another example of Hill’s talent as a novelist. Although the story is set in 1954 the plot is timeless, because it provides more than just entertainment, it presents itself as a literary novel as well. Hill is spot on once again with writing that is exceptional. Her writing is complemented with
characters that are fully developed, coupled with scenes so vividly drawn they become a character themselves.
What else does Vampire Instinct bring?

Like the rest of this series, Vampire Instinct grabs the reader’s attention on page one and takes the reader on a roller coaster ride of plot twists and turns, and emotional highs and lows through the entire book. Elisa and Mal are like all of Ms. Hill’s characters, very well developed and so well written that they appear real. Elisa has such a sense about life; she is nurturing, caring, loving but also has a little defiant streak. She has been through a lot in her short life, but she's a survivor and so strong willed. I admired her ability to bounce back after each tragedy in her life. I know I wouldn't be able to do that.
Mal is a handsome, strong, and very male vampire and has dedicated his life to helping and rehabilitating the large wild cats. I really admire someone who gives his all for a special purpose. The subject of young children as fledgling vampires makes for an emotional plot packed with intensity and some very painful scenes, which are very well written. Ms. Hill is able to create sexual tension between the main characters that is palpable. Vampire Instinct may be part of a series, but it's also able to be read as a stand-alone. Ms. Hill is always able to create characters that are so full of depth and emotion that I believe they are real and that I'm watching the scenes being played out instead of reading them. I highly recommend Vampire Instinct and that you keep a box of tissues handy.

[Mal] and Elisa explore their relationship as the author delivers erotic romance that is sizzling! Elisa’s trauma is palpable, as is her connection with the young vampires. Their interaction makes for a tear- jerking, excellent read! Hill’s latest is top-notch!
